The following document will answer your 56Kbps (V.90) Standard questions.

How do I upgrade my 56Kbps modem to V.90?
In most cases, you will just need to download a firmware update from the manufacturer. The biggest problem for many people will be not knowing who made their modem, or not being able to find the company. You can check the Modem Manufacturer List for upgrade information on your modem at:

Will upgrading to V.90 make my x2 modem K56flex-compatible or make my K56flex modem x2-compatible?
V.90 is a different protocol. If you've been waiting for a 56Kbps standard to be compatible with Netcom Canada, now is the time. Netcom has upgraded all modems to V.90, you can now connect using the V.90 protocol. As well, Netcom has also designed the network to accept the x2 standard. If you currently have an x2 modem, you don't have to upgrade anything. Your modem will still connect at 56Kbps speeds.

What init strings disable K56flex and V.90?
Add these commands to the end of your modem init string:
Force V.90 attempts: +MS=12
Disable V.90: +MS=56
Note that +MS=56 is part of many current K56flex init strings. After upgrading to V.90, make sure that your old init string isn't using +MS=56. If the modem manufacturer offers new drivers, be sure to download them.

Upgrading x2 modems to V.90
If I upgrade to V.90, will I still be able to connect to x2 modems at 56Kbps speeds?
Yes. Upgraded x2 modems will still be able to connect to either x2 or V.90 hosts and achieve faster-than-33.6 speeds.

What init strings disable x2 and V.90?
Add these commands to the end of your modem init string:
Sportster: S32=98
Courier: S58=33
